Sustainability management
Hansel’s sustainability work has long traditions: it started on some environmental issues in 2006, and more has been done to promote sustainability every year. Sustainability has long been one of the main themes of Hansel’s strategy, and since 2022, it has also been on the agenda of every Board meeting as part of the managing director’s review. In 2022, the Prime Minister’s Office extended the reporting obligation for sustainability indicators of state-owned companies.
Sustainability is present in the work of every Hansel employee, but it is the special responsibility of Hansel’s sustainability team, which currently has eight members from different units. The sustainability group is chaired by the director of finance, who is also responsible for sustainability in the Executive Committee. The task of the sustainability group is to improve the processes related to sustainability, monitor related legislation, offer training and share information about sustainability. The sustainability team met every two weeks and held one development event in 2022.
The sustainability team works actively with stakeholders and in 2022, the Nordic cooperation was also relaunched after the break caused by the pandemic. Under the leadership of Hansel’s sustainability team, the company has commissioned a third-party sustainability audit of the contracted suppliers in the dynamic purchasing system (DPS) for cleaning services 2021–2025. The audit remains ongoing, and its progress is being followed with great interest.
Category-specific measures to promote sustainability
In 2022, Hansel prepared a list of measures to support the promotion of sustainable procurement objectives. Priority was given to identifying measures for those product groups, i.e. categories, in which the promotion of sustainability targets offered the most benefits, and for which information on appropriate measures and requirements was available. The categories important for sustainability have been identified for carbon and environmental footprint in procurement (HILMI) in the legislation and measurement project (in Finnish).
The list includes key product and service groups for public sector procurement, as well as measures on environmental, social and economic sustainability themes and related objectives.
Currently, there are measures supporting sustainability objectives for approximately 30 categories. The list of measures will be used to conduct sustainability analyses during the preparatory phase of Hansel’s joint procurement projects to identify which sustainability targets will be promoted during the joint procurement and which measures will be taken to promote sustainability.
In early 2023, the measures will also be added to Hansel’s Procurement Pilot tool, which is freely accessible to all contracting entities via the Hilma notification channel. Procurement Pilot is an online tool that allows a contracting entity to first define which procurement targets will be promoted within the contracting entity at a strategic level. When this has been done, Procurement Pilot can also be used to identify and define the targets and measures for a specific procurement project. Hansel’s sustainability reporting
The results of our sustainability efforts are presented in the Sustainability Report, which is published annually in Finnish, Swedish, and English, integrated into the Annual Report. With regard to sustainability, the Annual Report presents key information for 2022 and provides information about related interesting events and achievements. The Sustainability Report relating to events in 2021 was published on 28 April 2022. Reports are prepared in accordance with the principles set forth in the GRI Standards. The standards complied with are from 2021.
The report includes a table presenting the content of the report sorted by materiality themes, the GRI Standards used, as well as instructions on where the information can be found in the report. If a piece of information is not available, it is mentioned in the table alongside an explanation for the omission. Some pieces of information are included in the financial statements.
The report has been put together by Hansel’s communications department together with advertising agency SST. The entire sustainability team participates in the preparation of the report, and it is approved by the Executive Committee. The Sustainability Report is also submitted to the Board of Directors for information.

The Sustainability Report is being published exclusively online for the tenth time. The report was verified by KPMG Oy Ab, Authorised Public Accountants.
