Hansel’s emissions continued to fall
Hansel’s emissions fell by around 10% between 2021 and 2022. Like last year, the emissions arising from Hansel’s operations were calculated in accordance with the GHG Protocol, with the same limitations. Emissions were reduced in particular by a switch to zero-emission recycled heat, for which Helen’s certificate of origin is available, and by relinquishing the facilities at Kuntatalo. With the removal of direct emissions from district heating, Hansel’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are now zero.
Emissions from IT services and company cars also decreased. The emissions from company cars were reduced by a decrease in the number of cars. Emissions were increased most by the increase in travel after the two pandemic years: air miles increased almost twentyfold, mileage allowances almost tripled and the number of hotel nights quadrupled. Purchases of non-IT services also grew.
Total emissions excluding services invoiced as pass-through expenses fell from 535 tonnes to 480 tonnes, or from 651 tonnes to 591 tonnes if pass-through expenses are included. Of the Scope 3 emissions excluding pass-through expenses, 91% were calculated using the ENVIMAT factors, and 9% by a consultant. The aim is to break down the purchased services into smaller categories next year to make it easier to target emission reduction measures.
Certificates of origin are available for all the electricity for which Hansel arranged competitive tendering. Most of the property information has been obtained from Ilmarinen, the owner of the property. The initial travel data has been compiled from a travel expense report programme and CWT reports.

Sustainability management
Hansel’s sustainability work has long traditions: it started on some environmental issues in 2006, and more has been done to promote sustainability every year.
Sustainability is managed with information
In the current work on sustainability, the emphasis is quite different from what it used to be: instead of pretty phrases, people want facts, and preferably in numerical or at least structured format.
Materiality assessment
Sustainability is extremely important in public procurement, and we wish to acknowledge sustainability extensively in our operations.
